Above the shores of Lake Windermere, in 67 acres of grounds, it’s the spectacular location of the Samling Hotel that first grabs the imagination. Blessed with stunning views across the glistening water to the rolling fells and peaks beyond, it’s also the perfect location to start exploring this gorgeous corner of the English countryside.
But the Samling offers much more. A dozen beautiful bedrooms, suites and cottages, fine dining and an award-winning wine list complete the recipe for a fabulous experience.
The Georgian-gothic house and its outbuildings are tastefully furnished and decorated, and set among woodlands, hay meadows and ornamental interlocking water gardens fed by springs and linked by paths and bridges. There’s also beehives and a listed summer house from where you can gaze along the length of the lake. And you might even spot a grazing deer in the long grass.
Choose to stay in one of the classic rooms in the main building or find your haven in one of the four luxurious suites hidden around the grounds. Each is individually designed.
Dinner is served in a glass-walled extension with a lake view, where you can enjoy chef Robby Jenks’ creations inspired by the dramatic surroundings and frequently based on ingredients sourced from the Samling’s own gardens, greenhouse and woods. The wine list is constantly evolving and features the full collection of Nyetimber’s exclusive English sparklers.
The Chef’s Table opposite the kitchen offers a glimpse behind the scenes and has space for six guests to become almost a part of the creative process. And don’t miss the chance to sit down for one of the hotel’s traditional afternoon teas.
Meanwhile, The Gathering offers more relaxed dining overlooking the gardens and the Reverie bar, named after a Wordsworth poem staged right here in the grounds, is the place to sip a cocktail under the stars.
